One must wear an apron to protect oneself from the chill from the ice box!

I have the most aprons of any human being. If you go into ebay and type in “Vintage Apron Lots” you can buy 50+ aprons for $20 or less. When I went to Kansas for the first time I found a thrift store with an enormous stash of aprons priced at just $1 each, I knew I needed to start collecting them to spice up my outfits. Since I am a vegan ice cream maker/barista by trade, I wear the aprons to protect my clothes from coffee and sugar spills. Here I am battling an enormous cockroach!

Pink and white gingham

Full apron with little blue flowers

Pleated apron from Julia!

Pink Gingham with flowers

Faded purple and white

Lots of yellow flowers

This is about as casual as I get! I’m wearing a t shirt (NO!) from my Tattoo Artist, Annie Mess.

Gold with geometric shapes

Sheer with floral panels

Sometimes it can really tie an outfit together.
As an art teacher, I like wearing aprons when I teach. In so many of my dresses, there are no functional pockets, so it’s nice to always have the option of having an apron pocket to stash pens or remote controls and whatnot. Once, my students were really into Rubix cubes and they would solve them under their desks while I was lecturing/demonstrating about silkscreening. I walked around and collected them into my apron pockets (to remove the distraction) and my apron soon grew into strange geometric bulge!

What do you think, dear readers?
Can you confidently wear the apron out and about or is an oppressive symbol of servitude?
I normally don’t wear my aprons out, but I do love wearing them while I’m doing things around the house!
In my view, aprons are not only insanely useful (especially to spill/mess prone gals like me
, but really pretty additions to anyone’s kitchen. Aprons have been worn for centuries by both sexes (and in some industries still are), and I don’t think the idea of it being a sign of “women’s drudge work” came about until more recently as there was a backlash against housework as an exclusive “career” for women. (If I make any sense… lol!)

They look great on you! What a great collection to have! Adorable!
I believe I could wear and apron out, and even my head full of pincurls. I live in an older district of Warsaw, where there are many old people, probably remembering the times when the inhabitants of one building were so acquainted that they didn’t mind the apron while chatting with a friend neighbour, sitting on a bench in front of the building. *^v^*
Joanna, what a lovely image!
Like your apron designs, one with little blue flowers looks awesome. It was nice going through your blog. Keep it up the good work.
Your blog is so cute!
When I first started tattooing I used to wear my collection of vintage aprons and I had a business card that stated “tattoos like mom used to make” ’cause I love doing that old school style.
Keep up the great blog (I’m addicted)!
My boyfriend use to go to japan every year and he would bring me back street style magazines and all the kids there were wearing aprons with their clothes and so I tried it out here in Florida with mixed reviews but I ADORE vintage aprons!
I remembered this post about aprons as fashion when I saw this picture in the NYT today with a vintage apron…

You’re obviously ahead of the fashion curve!
It’s the 4th picture in the sequence in the NYT article…
