- Navy 1950s tilt hat – flea market in Arkansas
- Kissing Swans necklace – From a trip to New Mexico when I was 17 (I think?)
- 1930s wrap dress with polka dots – Belonged to the radiant Robyn at one time, I’ve had it for a few years now. I always wear it on patriotic holidays.
- Navy knee socks
- Red strappy shoes with a wooden sole

Dear readers, I realize that it’s been quite some time since my last outfit post (nearly two months! notice how the plants behind me have wilted in the July heat!) and I do apologize. My summer school session is over, and I’m back to making ice cream, dressing up, and not waking up at the ungodly hour of 5:30 am to commute to school. Today I’m missing the Vegan Hot Dog eating contest, but I’m hoping to sneak on to some rooftops to spy the fireworks over Town Lake in downtown Austin. July 4th is my least favorite holiday, because of the simple equation of Cheap Explosives + Beer + Clumsy Boys = Me Terrified. I’m content to watch professional fireworks from a distance, thanks!
Have fun, everyone!

Today was B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L! After work I went on a long bike ride and sat under some windy trees that were in full bloom with jasmine and honeysuckle scents wafting in. Spring! You are so short, but so so sweet!
Bellewether wears
- a yellow rosebud dress
- with peach cameo
- yellow hand dyed vintage slip (embroidered by me, it reads “C’mon sweetheart, show me yours!”)
- and her little butterscotch shoes.

- Bow snipped from a Hello Kitty plush and affixed to a clip
- Glass umbrella earrings
- Polka dot umbrella from Toy Joy, Austin, Texas
- 1930s flower dress – Buffalo Exchange
- red stretchy belt – American Apparel
- Red tights – American Apparel
- Black shoes – Melissa store, Belo Horizonte, Brazil
I wore entirely too much makeup last night (detailed post to follow) that my eyes were a little puffy this morning and my sink is filled with gold glitter. Today is entirely beautiful outside – not a cloud to be seen! Wearing these tights proved too hot in the afternoon, but they were perfect for my early morning bike ride to work.

Sorry, no close-up today. I was up late late late working on issue #5 of Doublespeak, which is SO long over due it’s not even funny. I drank loads of coffee and ate too much sugar and ended up not letting up until around 3am. I tell you all this because I didn’t wash my hair, hence the teased nest+bandana combination. While I was biking to work this morning a homeless man yelled “I LOVE LUCY!” and also one of my customers asked me if I liked “I Love Lucy.”
Okay, I see that we both have blue eyes, red lipstick and red hair, but there are more subtle differences: my eyes are more teal, my hair is less carroty (and floofy, usually), my lips have a different silhouette.

Here is Belleweather again. I think we are going to craft and watch bits of Carnivale, Season 2 tonight. I love the production design of this show and I love the The Dreifuss family: their style, their story, everything.
This is from Wikipedia:
To give a sense of the dry and dusty environment of the Dust Bowl, smoke and dirt were constantly blown through tubes onto the set. The actors’ clothes were ragged and drenched in dirt, and Carnivàle had an estimated 5,000 people costumed in the show’s first season alone. The creative team listened to 1930s music and radio and read old Hollywood magazines to get the period’s sound, language, and slang right. The art department had an extensive research library of old catalogs, among them an original 1934 Sears Catalog, which were purchased at flea markets and antique stores. The East European background of some characters and Asian themes in Brother Justin’s story were incorporated into the show. Except for the show’s supernatural elements, a historical consultant deemed Carnivàle’s historic accuracy to be excellent in regard to the characters’ lives and clothes, their food and accommodations, their cars and all the material culture.
8 million USD were the budget for each of the episodes! No wonder they look so amazing!

Tetsie and I went on a long, meandering walk with her dog, a half poodle named Seuss. My daily outfit photo was taken about five hours later than I normally take it, hence the sunshine and shadow!
Tetsie finds a swing in front of a wonderful 1920s bungalow in Hyde Park.
Guess who else lives in Austin? These birds! Are they pheasant? Some kind of chicken? This city girl doesn’t know!
We also saw wild green parrots who have built quite a substantial nest in the spotlight beams above the intramural fields. It’s said that someone let some domesticated birds go a few years ago and they’ve mated and build a little colony. Maybe Texas is similar to their native climate? It was really sweet to hear them peeping and chirping high above our heads while the sun was setting.

- Brown Beret – Military Supply Store, Seattle, WA
- Leopard collar – H&M, San Francisco
- 1940s coat with zip off bottom (converts to cape!!) – Cheap Thrills, Fayetteville, AR
- Red gloves – from an estate sale in Eugene, OR
- Brown polka dot pleated dress – Buffalo Exchange, Austin, TX
- Brown knee socks
- Brown Heels – Buffalo Exchange, Austin, TX
- Russian Red lipstick – MAC
I love brown and red! I have tried so hard to successfully incorporate animal print in a tasteful way in my wardrobe in the past few years, and the only things I’ve held on to are this fluffy collar from H&M and a muff from Coquette Faux Furriers. I’ve tried on a billion leopard print dresses but they are too rockabilly Portland for my taste.

January 9th, 2007 – this was the first incarnation of this outfit nearly three years ago. I was still in Graduate school in Eugene, OR and I took this photo right before I rode my bike to school that morning. I’m still using the tube of Russian Red lipstick I wore in this photo. How little has changed!
Today was a brown and red kind of day, obviously! Tetsie (the other Grackle Sister) showed up to work at the toy store and we worked the counter together. We’ve been friends long enough that we synchronize our speech and actions, so people get a little curious about us curling ribbon and suggesting Hello Kitty toys in synch.

Have a nice weekend everyone!
